Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A
What is vaginal rejuvenation?
Rather than a single procedure or treatment, vaginal rejuvenation covers any process, medical or cosmetic, that addresses your concerns about your vagina and labia. It’s true that vaginal rejuvenation used to include surgical procedures such as vaginoplasty and labiaplasty, but recent innovations in technology have resulted in non-surgical treatments that address medical rejuvenation as well as cosmetic and sexual performance factors.
Due to childbirth and menopause, changes occur to your genitalia over the course of your life. Childbirth may, for example, cause stretching and looseness of the vagina, while time and menopause can result in drooping of the labia that some feel is unattractive.
In other cases, changes to hormone production can affect the moisture and natural lubrication produced in response to sexual stimulation, making intercourse uncomfortable or painful. Surgery can’t address this issue, but hormone therapy and new laser treatments can.
How can lasers help with vaginal rejuvenation?
Your body has several regenerating systems that typically activate in response to injury. For instance, after a cut, a scab forms and your body starts making new tissue, including collagen, elastin, blood vessels, and skin.
Dr. Lara uses the FemiLift® laser system to assist in the regeneration of vaginal tissue to improve vaginal health and relieve symptoms. The laser energy warms the deep layers of your vaginal tissue to the point where the body perceives it’s damaged, which may help stimulate a natural healing process that may relieve your symptoms.
What surgical treatments are available for vaginal rejuvenation?
Dr. Lara loves being able to improve vaginal health using less invasive treatments, but as a Harvard-trained surgeon she also has the skills and ability to rejuvenate vaginal tissue surgically with a labiaplasty or episiotomy.
Labiaplasty
During a labiaplasty, Dr. Lara trims the lips of your labia to reduce discomfort and improve aesthetics. A labiaplasty is the most common vaginal rejuvenation procedure.
Episiotomy repair
An episiotomy may have been necessary during the delivery of your baby, but can cause painful intercourse or incontinence. Dr. Lara can repair your episiotomy to tighten and reinforce the introitus, or entrance, to your vaginal canal.
Dr. Lara also provides the ALMI™ FemShot for vaginal rejuvenation, which is an injection that stimulates new blood supply to your vaginal tissue and the production of collagen to regenerate the mucosa.
